A nationalist politician has again called for Armenia to withdraw its signature from rapprochement protocols with Turkey.
Giro Manoyan, a member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun and head of the Hay Dat (Armenian Cause) office, said that Turkey's recent conduct had shown that Ankara would not ratify the protocols until the Karabakh conflict was resolved, News.am reported.
“Last April when he suspended the ratification process, the Armenian president announced that the signature would not be withdrawn yet. It is clear that 'yet' is a precise term and I believe that this time is approaching. It is an assumption but taking into account the recent statements of the president, especially in Cyprus, one can conclude that the Armenian leader thinks the time is coming too,” Manoyan told journalists on Tuesday.
In a speech to the Cypriot parliament last month, President Serzh Sarsyan placed the blame for the failure of the rapprochement process firmly on Turkey.
Giro Manoyan said today that Turkey was doing its utmost to increase pressure on Armenia so that it did not pull out of the reconciliation process.
Serzh Sargsyan said shortly after his Cyprus trip that Yerevan might consider withdrawing its signature from the two protocols.
Rapprochement between the two countries stalled last year when both the Turkish and Armenian parliaments failed to ratify two protocols on normalizing relations signed in October 2009.
