Russian journalist Viktoria Ivleva, who was in Khojaly on 26 February 1992, shared her memories about that tragic date.
'The most important for me is that many innocent people died in Khojaly and I think no military victories justify the victims around civilians. Thanks to the great research, held by journalist Shahin Hajiyev, I managed to trace the life of a Meskhetian, whom I met in Khojaly. At the moment of the attack, her child was just two days, overall, Mehriban, this was her name, had four little children', Ivleva said.
She said she has a photo on which she sits barefooted with an infant, and near her a partisan with two guns is ransacking someone. “Is it normal for a woman, who has just delivered? Someone would say she was not beaten or raped and was even provided with food in captivity. Thanks a lot, certainly, but she must not have been in captivity and she must not have given birth to a child in a basement.
The journalist said we all know that a terrible military crime was committed and those who committed it cannot be pardoned.
'But unfortunately, no one is still able to say something for sure about these people. All have avoided responsibility so far. It will continue unless you start treating each other normally, with respect, though it may seem odd. Try to live in the present, not only the past. This is our common problem-the inability to live in the present. I share the grief about the innocent victims of Khojaly and despite everything I wish you all peace, respect to the memory of the dead and each other'.
Ivleva also expressed her wishes to the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides.
'First of all, I wish you peace and respect to each other and memories of the dead. Simply speaking, I have a dream for Azerbaijani and Armenian journalists to start the joint investigation of Sumgayit events of February 1988 and the attack of Khojaly in February 1992. I understand that it sounds like a fancy, but I do not lose hope'.
