Council Of Europe Able To Force Armenia To Peace

E-mail Print PDF

Interview with deputy Sevinj Fataliyeva.

Q: Do you think the attitude of the Council of Europe and PACE to Azerbaijan is satisfactory?

A: The attitude of the Council of Europe to Azerbaijan is quite high, to my mind since Azerbaijan’s influence in this European structure is high while the Azerbaijani delegation is active in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The accelerated development of Azerbaijan in all spheres certainly plays a role in improving these ties.

Q: Is the Azerbaijani side satisfied considering the established good relations between Baku and Council of Europe, the activeness of this European structure in Karabakh conflict settlement?

A: Unfortunately, these relations are not manifested so far, they do not play a sufficient role in the resolution of the Karabakh conflict. Naturally, it is hampered by the Armenian diaspora, which is active enough. In this connection, there is a need for intensification of the Azerbaijani diaspora.

All Azerbaijanis residing abroad should be active in both protecting the interests of Azerbaijan and resisting Armenian diaspora. Azerbaijani diaspora should always remember that it bears a definite responsibility for bringing the truth about Azerbaijan to the attention of the world community. It should not be passive or have any fears in bringing the truth about Azerbaijan to the world. I would like to repeat that all Azerbaijanis, regardless of the age, social or other status, must be active in this issue.

Q: Was the Azerbaijani delegation in PACE active in bringing the problems of the country to the attention of the European community in bringing the problems of the country to the attention of the European community?

A: I have begun to represent Azerbaijan in PACE just recently but I can say that the Azerbaijani delegation has always been active through ten years of country’s membership in this structure. Certainly, there could be some shortages in the activity of the Azerbaijani delegation in PACE or spheres which did not receive the due attention.

If there are such shortages, they are connected with the Karabakh problem. In other words, in its activity in PACE Azerbaijani delegation uses a significant part of its energy, power in the direction of the Karabakh settlement.

Q: Is it grounded to lay hopes on a breakthrough in Karabakh settlement after the PACE subcommittee on this conflict resumes activity?

A: There are many positive expectations of the activity of this subcommittee, since this structure incorporates not only the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides but also the parliamentarians of many countries. In this view, I believe the role of deputies from these countries may become significant in solving the conflict. I hope the members of the PACE subcommittee on Karabakh and other countries can justify their functions and contribute to settling the problem.

I think this work of the parliamentarians from other countries and the overall activity of the subcommittee can and is able to force Armenia to take definite steps to settle the conflict.

Sevinj Fataliyeva, deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee of international relations and interparliamentary ties, member of the Azerbaijani delegation in PACE.
