Turkish Court Rules To Tear Down Monument To Humanity

E-mail Print PDF

An administrative court in the Turkish town of Erzrum has ruled in favor of Kars Municipality to tear down the Monument to Peace and Humanity symbolizing the Armenian-Turkish friendship, CNN Turk reported.

The same court recently satisfied sculptor Mehmet Aksoy's claim to postpone the demolition of the monument. The municipality of Kars later appealed the decision.

Earlier the municipality had ruled to tear down the statue. The members of the ruling Justice and Development party, 11 representatives of the Nationalistic Movement party and eight members of the opposition party had approved the decision.

After visiting Kars in January, Turkish Prime Minister described the statue freakish and issued an order to demolish it.
