UAE Supports Azerbaijan's Position On Peaceful Settlement Of Karabakh Conflict

The UAE appreciates Azerbaijan's position on the peaceful settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, UAE F oreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said at a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov , the Azerbaijani F oreign Ministry reported .

During the meeting, Nahyan said the UAE supports the candidacy of Azerbaijan's for non-permanent membership in the U.N. Security Council in 2012-2013.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.

The UAE Foreign Ministr y said it hopes to open an embassy in Azerbaijan.

He said the ambassador to Azerbaijan will be appointed soon .

The Azerbaijani foreign minister emphasized that Azerbaijan attaches special attention to its relations with Arab countries.

" T he Azerbaijani leadership focuses on improving the relations with Arab countries in all fields. Azerbaijan is interested in cooperation with the League of Arab States and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf , " Mammadyarov said.

The ministers discussed bilateral relations and ways to enhance them, particularly in the political, economic and investment fields.
