The US ambassador to Armenia, Marie Yovanovitch, has ruled out a military resolution to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Karabakh.
Talking to journalists on Wednesday, Yovanovitch said the US was closely cooperating with its OSCE Minsk Group partners – Russia and France – and said that the mediators had repeatedly called for the conflict to be solved through talks.
The US ambassador said the Minsk Group co-chairs had recently met the conflict parties to maintain the momentum created at the summit of the Armenian, Azerbaijani and Russian presidents in Sochi. She also stressed the importance of progress in the peace process and avoiding new incidents along the contact line separating the two sides' troops.
On Turkish-Armenian relations, she said It would be better if Ankara and Yerevan could make progress in the normalization process and ratify the protocols restoring diplomatic relations, signed in October 2009.
Marie Yovanovitch said the USA was encouraging the sides to make progress, but this had not yet happened and work was continuing. Various programs, including student trips, are carried out to improve relations between the nations. Personal contacts will contribute to convergence and mutual understanding between the nations, she said.
