Turkey To Focus On Armenia in 2015

E-mail Print PDF

Turkey will be focusing on major historical questions in 2015, including the Armenian issue, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said.

The year 2015 will see the centenary of the battles of Canakkale, known more widely in English as the Gallipoli campaign.

Ahmet Davutoglu referred to the anniversary in an address to a conference in Istanbul, News.am reported, quoting Turkish newspaper Sabah.

The foreign minister said that the government aimed to unite with neighbouring countries and regions, remove existing psychological barriers, clarify historical issues, combine economies and ensure high level political contacts.

The mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915-16, which the Republic of Armenia says constituted genocide, is a major stumbling block in attempts to build relations between Armenia and Turkey.

The two countries agreed to set up a joint commission to investigate the killings as part of two protocols on rapprochement signed in 2009. The protocols have since stalled, however, and neither side has ratified them.
