Armenia can withdraw its signature put to the protocols at any moment.
The Armenian-Turkish protocols cannot become effective in the foreseeable future. In their present form they must pass into history, the expert in Turkic studies Anush Hovhannisyan, Senior Researcher, Institute of Oriental Studies, Armenian National Academy of Sciences, told journalists April 1.
According to her, Armenia can withdraw its signature put to the protocols at any moment, which is, however, not the best way of resolving the problem. “If the Armenian side makes such a step, it will turn out a trump in Turkey’s hands,” the expert said.
Responding to question about the prospects for the Armenian-Turkish protocols after the parliamentary elections in Turkey scheduled for this June, Hovhannisyan said: “No activity can be expected in the course of time unless there is any external impetus. The parliamentary and, later, presidential elections are unlikely to bring about any steps in this direction.”
On October 10, 2009, in Zurich, the Armenian and Turkish Foreign Ministers, Edward Nalbandian and Ahmet Davutoglu, signed Armenian-Turkish protocols establishing bilateral relations.
