E-mail Print PDF

French President Nicolas Sarkozy does not to support the bill penalizing the denial of so called Armenian Genocide, his chief advisor has said, according to the Turkish Hurriyet.

According to the report of Tert.am, Jean-David Levitte made the statement in Ankara at a meeting with the Turkish state minister and chief envoy on EU membership issues, Egemen Bagish.

"You are aware of President Sarkozy's stance on the issue. We do not support the initiative," he said. "The question was included into the agenda by the Socialist party, so you have to work with the socialists."

The opposition Socialist Party was preparing to bring the bill to the Senate on May 4.

The bill envisages five years' imprisonment and a fine in the amount of 45,000 Euros for anyone denying so called Armenian genocide on the territory of France.
