Bagish urged French parliamentarians to take an active part in negotiations between Azerbaijan, Armenia.
Head of the Ankara delegation on talks about Turkey's EU membership, Egemen Bagish urged French deputies to avert discussing the bill on the so-called "Armenian genocide" in the French Senate Wednesday, Anadolu agency reports.
“Politicians cannot assume historians’ functions', he said while talking to a group of deputies in the National Assembly of France.
Armenia and its lobby claim that Turkey’s forerunner—the Ottoman Empire—committed ‘genocide’ against Anadolu Armenians in 1915.
Bagish reminded that a group of French socialist deputies suggested submitting this bill for discussion in the Senate. He said Turkey and France already have ‘differences’ in bilateral relations.
Bagish also urged the French parliamentarians to take an active part in negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the resolution of the Karabakh conflict.
“Since France is a co-chair in the OSCE Minsk Group, French politicians are expected to take steps to ensure the return of Azerbaijani occupied lands and to render support to a million of Azerbaijani refugees in their going back home”, Bagish said.
