'Armenian President Was Not Elected, But Only Took Over As Head Of State'

US State Departments send message to Armenian authorities.

US State Department report on human rights issued in 2010 is a sort of a message for the Armenian authorities, chief of the “Heritage” faction Stepan Safaryan said at a press conference.

This report notes that the Armenian president was not elected, but only took over as head of state, Safaryan said.

"Assessing the presidential elections and his three-year term, the report notes that the situation in the country did not change over these years,"  Safaryan added.

This assessment is not random and are a kind of assessment of domestic and foreign policy of the Armenian authorities, the opposition official noted.

The MP did not rule out the relationship of this assessment with the ratification of the agreement that extended stay of the Russian base in Armenia.

Asked whether the use of wording “occupation of great part of Karabakh region of Azerbaijan” by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair country appropriate, he said one should not take offence at such statements, as they are related to Yerevan’s official position.

“If Armenian authorities fail to recognize Karanbakh, what one should expect from the United States?

If the governments officially welcome the statement in L'Aquila and Muskoka, where it is noted that the autonomous region of Nagorno-Karabakh is surrounded by occupied territories, why then we get offended at the wording of the State Department?” he said.
