The European Parliament has excluded a paragraph on the need for contact with separatist entities from a review of its neighbourhood policy.
Armenian had attempted to introduce the formulation on the need for European contacts with de facto regimes into the European Parliament motion on the the Review of the European Neighbourhood Policy - Eastern Dimension, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Elkhan Polukhov told 1 news.az.
Polukhov described the European Parliament resolution passed on 7 April as positive.
"Referring to regulations in earlier resolutions, including EU resolutions, such as the resolution on the need for an EU strategy in the South Caucasus, the resolution of the European Parliament of 7 April confirms the EU position on the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. This resolution also expresses concern at the violation of the rights of refugees and displaced persons," Polukhov said.
Paragraph 48 of the draft resolution had called on European bodies "to develop more confidence-building measures and
programmes, including the launching of new missions and public communication strategies and the consideration of pragmatic initiatives and innovative approaches such as informal contacts and consultations with the societies and de facto authorities of the breakaway territories, while conserving the EU’s non-recognition policy, in order to support civic culture and community dialogue".
Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Belgium and the EU, Emin Eyubov said the clause had been removed following debate in the European Parliament.
