E-mail Print PDF

'The Azerbaijani government has the right to express concerns over Metsamor station in Armenia.

However, I hesitate to comment on this question, because my credentials include only issues of technical cooperation with Azerbaijan,' representative of the International Atomic Energy Agency Andrey Chupov told reporters in Baku.

The IAEA official said he is pleased with the bilateral cooperation with Azerbaijan.

Chupov noted that the laboratory built in Azerbaijan will help to control radiation and radioactive safety.

'Most modern instruments and equipment will be installed in the laboratory and highly qualified specialists will be involved. This laboratory is created in accordance with the agreement signed between IAEA and the Government of Azerbaijan which is expected to become operational in the near future,' Chupov said.

The laboratory will allow to conduct radioactive monitoring in many areas, from environment to food, he continued. Chupov dismissed the reports that nuclear research reactor will be built in Azerbaijan.

The parties are currently studying just the possible use of nuclear energy for scientific and civil purposes, he noted.

'No agreement has been signed on construction of a nuclear center in Azerbaijan. The parties are simply speculating on the use of nuclear energy for civil purposes.'
