Baku Wants Support For Armenian Nuke Plant Closure

E-mail Print PDF

Azerbaijani Prime Minister Artur Rasizade has called for international support for the closure of the Armenian nuclear power station.

He made the call at a summit on the safe and innovative use of nuclear energy, which is being held in Ukraine on the 25th anniversary of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

Addressing the summit, the Azerbaijani PM drew attention to the Metsamor nuclear power plant, which he described as dangerously outdated. The plant is located in a major earthquake zone in Armenia and poses a threat to the whole region.

He urged the international community to support the closure of the Metsamor plant.

In his summit speech, Artur Rasizade also expressed his deep condolences to the families of those involved in the Chernobyl cleanup. He said that 8,000 Azerbaijanis had been involved in tackling the consequences of the 26 April 1986 catastrophe.

The summit in Kiev has brought together leaders and representatives of countries and international organizations.

With a focus on the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and the current developments at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan, the summit is discussing implementation of commitments made at the nuclear safety summit in Washington last year and preparing for the next nuclear safety summit in South Korea in 2012. The UN Chernobyl Recovery and Development Program for 2006-2016 is also under review at the summit.
