Azerbaijani Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova, appealing to the international community and influential international organizations, has demanded that Armenian terrorists and their defenders be prosecuted. "The efforts of international organizations to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict should not rely on double standards and should be realized in accordance with international legal norms and principles. The country's territorial integrity, the rights of Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs, should be restored. Influential international organizations should impose sanctions against Armenia," says Azerbaijani Ombudsman’s statement made in connection with the day of occupation of Shusha and Lachin.

"We believe that Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan and the policy of terror and violation of human rights in a mass form will end," the statement says.

The Ombudsman expressed the hope that a peaceful resolution of the conflict will be negotiated and supported. She also voiced her hope for the liberation of the occupied territories and the return of refugees and IDPs to their homes, and urged international organizations to assist Azerbaijan in this matter.

"I declare that the violation of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity by Armenia and the Armenian nationalists, the occupation of native lands, the destruction and misappropriation of historical and cultural values, violation of human rights, including cultural rights in the mass form - all these are absolutely contrary to all international legal norms and principles," Suleymanova said.

The statement was addressed to the UN, the Council of Europe, the European Commission, the OSCE, International and European Institute of Ombudsmen, Asian Ombudsman Association and other international organizations.

Shusha was occupied on May 8, 1992 and Lachin was occupied on May 18, 1992.
