Nuclear power plant forum delayed amid Japan disaster fears.
A forum planned in Armenia to attract investments for the construction of a new nuclear power plant has been delayed indefinitely, after the Japan disaster sparked worldwide safety concerns.
The press service of Armenia’s Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources said that the forum – titled “New Nuclear Energy Bloc-Investment Opportunities” and initially scheduled on April 27-28 – will not take place for an unknown time.
The ministry also said that several invited international companies asked to delay the forum before they can discuss and consider all the possible safety standards and measures for new nuclear power plants (NPP).
It comes after Japan was hardly hit by a huge tsunami and ensuing quake that left more than 14,000 dead and damaged the cooling system of the Fukushima NPP, raising radiation levels in the country’s north-east on March 11.
Armenia is planning to build a new NPP in its Armavir region, next to the existing Metsamor MPP.
The new NPP is planned to be of 1060 MW and with 60 years of operation period. It is planned to be operations in 2016.
A total of $5 billion of investments will be necessary for the completion of the project.
