Armenia May Increase Drafting Age

E-mail Print PDF

The Armenian government offers to draft young people from 19 years.

The country’s parliament has today discussed the relevant bill on introducing alterations to the law on military duty.

When introducing the bill, Justice Minister Hrayr Tovmasyan emphasized importance of making changes, since with the shift to 12-year secondary education, some 6,000 young people will finish school at the drafting age. “In this case the young people will get a right to obtain secondary education and on the other hand, they will turn 18 years and be subject to drafting”, Tovmasyan said.

He also added that this issue caused concerns among people, especially parents, regarding prospects of education of their children. In this view, he said the drafting age is to be raised to 19 to ease concerns. He also said the bill had been discussed with the ministers of defense, education and science of Armenia and also received a positive inference of the parliamentary commission on issues of defense, security and internal affairs.
