Armenian Withdrawal To Be 'First Step' In Karabakh Settlement

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov received the delegation led by President of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Petros Efthymiou.

Mammadyarov noted that OSCE is important international organization and underlined Azerbaijan’s interest to continue the cooperation with this organization, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

They exchanged view on peaceful negotiations held through the intermediary of the OSCE Minsk Group towards the settlement of Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

Mammadyarov said that the holding of Azerbaijani lands under the occupation and the expulsion of the Azerbaijani population from these lands even more complicated the settlement process of the conflict. The minister stressed that the first step to be made towards peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is the withdrawal of Armenian forces from Azerbaijani territories.

He also expressed hope that this step of the Armenian side will positively influence the political situation in the region. The guest was informed that the position of the Armenian leadership on changing the borders by force of arms is unacceptable and contrary to the rules and principles of the international law.

Efthymiou highly assessed Azerbaijan’s cooperation, said that Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict was not protracted. He noted that he will urge all OSCE PA member countries to contribute to achieve the settlement of this conflict
