Azeri and Turkish Diasporas Lobby Against US Aid to Armenia and Karabakh

E-mail Print PDF

Azerbaijani and Turkish Diasporas in the US ask the legislators to cut US aid to the Armenian-occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, APA reported. The Diaspora’s action comes right after the pro-Armenian Congressman Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) circulated a letter urging his US House colleagues to support expanded aid to Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, and a number of other pro-Armenia provisions in the Fiscal Year 2012 foreign aid bill.

‘Dear Colleague’ letter circulated by Rep. Pallone Urges $60 million for Armenia; $10 million for Karabakh. The pro-Armenian Congressman also called the Congress strengthening of Section 907 of the FREEDOM Support Act and maintaining military aid parity to Armenia and Azerbaijan.

In their turn, US Azeris and Turks declared that they will fight against those proposals.

“Since 2005, as a result of changes in the wording of the State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Appropriations bills, the US funds have been provided only to the Armenian community of Nagorno-Karabakh region, whereas over half a million Azerbaijanis expelled from the region during the conflict were deprived of this assistance. In the absence of political settlement of the conflict, such unilateral US assistance undermines the humanitarian nature and impartiality of the original Congressional intent, which was to address the needs of the entire conflict-affected population,” says the Azeri Diaspora.
