The occupational policy, carried out by the Armenian leadership, goes contrary to the criteria of membership in the UN Security Council.
Azerbaijan’s permanent representative in UN, envoy Agshin Mehdiyev, made the statement while speaking to AzerTAj.'The UN Security Council bears the main responsibility for preservation of peace and international security. The decisions taken by the Council are obligatory and all UN member-states have to follow them. On the other hand, the membership in the UN Security Council is of great political importance for the country', he said.
According to him, currently the UN Security Council incorporates 15 states with the United States, Great Britain, China, France and Russia as permanent members, while the rest ten are elected by the temporary members for two years and every year half of them change
'As is known, October of this year will see next elections of new temporary members of the UN Security Council for 2012-2013. Alongside Azerbaijan, the candidates for the vacant seat assigned for the Eastern European Group were to be Hungary, Slovenia and Armenia but Yerevan withdrew its candidates some time ago.
Publications in Armenian mass media citing official sources of information that Armenia never nominated for these elections contradict existing facts and are regretful', Mehdiyev said.
The diplomat said there are no doubts that the Armenian leadership fearing the competition with Azerbaijan and failure in elections preferred to withdraw its candidacy and not take part in elections.
'The recent controversial and untrue materials published in Armenian mass media pursue the aim to conceal the inefficiency of the foreign policy of Yerevan from Armenian people.
In line with the UN Charter, the countries running for the temporary membership in the UN Security Council, must primarily pay special attention to preserving peace and international security and contribution to other goals of the organization.
This does not respond to the criteria of Armenian membership in the UN Security Council, which would be seen clearly in elections', the Azerbaijani representative in UN said.
Mehdiyev voiced confidence that Armenia would get minimal votes during elections.
'So, they should forget about membership in the UN Security Council unless they give up their occupational policy', the diplomat said.
