Bitter experience of Japan should alarm the international community.

The statement came from Azerbaijan Industry and Energy Ministry senior official Rasim Mammadov in his remarks for journalists.

Representatives of Caspian littoral states and states bordering with Armenia should take the necessary measures to close down Metsamor nuclear power plant in Armenia, Mammadov said.

Azerbaijan will send an official appeal to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the EU to shut down the second block of Metsamor nuclear plant.

“Nuclear power plants, meeting all available international standards, operate in Japan. However, they could not resist the disaster. This tragedy caused enormous damage to environment and people. This sad and bitter experience of Japan should alarm the international community, particularly those in the Caspian region, South and North Caucasus.

Nuclear power plant in Armenia does not meet any standards in this area as its service life has expired. Therefore, the station must be closed,” he added.
