E-mail Print PDF

The process of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement has entered an active phase, the Azerbaijani foreign minister said.

Elmar Mammadyarov who is now in Washington on a working visit, has told reporters that the conflicting parties are now working towards coordinating the basic principles.

"But the coordination of the basic principles does not imply signing of a peace agreement. We must not allow the process to drag on for some 70 years," he said, stressing the importance of signing an agreement within a period of 6-12 months.

The Azeri top diplomat also briefed on US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's stance on the issue, saying that she is looking forward to the elaboration of a peace treaty.

"I totally agree with her," he said. "It is necessary to start working on a peace treaty as soon as possible."
