The US envoy in Baku has described the Azerbaijani foreign minister's recent visit to Washington as helpful in the development of bilateral relations.

“We discussed the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, joint cooperation in Afghanistan, and issues of democratic development. All these issues are priorities for us in relations and we are glad that Azerbaijan and the United States show mutual understanding on all three issues,” Matthew Bryza told journalists on Tuesday.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other officials in Washington on Friday.

Bryza said that the US hoped for progress in the negotiating process on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict at the meeting of the presidents of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia in Kazan, 1 news.az reported.

The Deauville statement by the presidents of Russia, France and the USA, which co-chair the OSCE Minsk Group mediating a solution to the conflict, clearly states the mediators' position on the need for progress, Bryza said

“In this regard, I am hopeful that at the meeting in Kazan this statement will become a basis for the continuation of the negotiating process to find a solution,” the ambassador said.
