Time For Major Breakthrough On Karabakh

A senior Azerbaijani official has said that it is time for a breakthrough in resolution of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.

The head of the public policy department at the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration, Ali Hasanov, said there were serious expectations of the summit of the Armenian, Azerbaijan and Russian presidents, scheduled for 25 June in Kazan, 1news.az reported.

His comments echo remarks made last week by the head of the Presidential Administration, Ramiz Mehdiyev.

“We believe it is time for a major breakthrough in the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. Given that the presidents of the Minsk Group co-chairing states made a statement in which they expressed their desire for a resolution of the conflict, it creates opportunities for the resolution of the conflict,” Ali Hasanov said, referring to a statement of the US, French and Russian presidents made in Deauville.

The statement called on the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders to take a decisive step towards settling the conflict.

Ali Hasanov said that the resolution of the conflict depended not only on Azerbaijan, but also on Armenia which he said had been taking a nonconstructive stance for many years.

“Armenia has repeatedly disavowed issues that have been agreed, thereby protracting the negotiation process even further,” Ali Hasanov said.
