Anti-Turkish Campaign Of Armenia in Toronto Failed

E-mail Print PDF

Armenian Youth Federation launched a 72-hour Hunger Strike in Toronto (Canada) calling on Turkey to recognize the so-called "Armenian Genocide" and "stop human rights violations", said the statement of Azerbaijani-American Council.

Starting Friday, June 10, Armenians gathered at a close distance to the Turkish Consulate on Queens Quay and Lower Spadina Avenue, with signs, flags, a coffin and other attributes. They were there for 3 days, including the Sunday Candlelight Vigilance at 9 pm right across the street from the Consulate.

However, from the very first day of the hunger strike, Friday, Azerbaijanis and Turks were handing out brochures and fact sheets about Armenian lies, aggressive policies, hatred, occupation of Azerbaijani lands and Khojaly, across the street from the Armenians. Azerbaijanis were also armed with posters, signs, t-shirts and flags.

If at the beginning the action on each sides was attended by approximately 40 people, but later Azerbaijanis and Turks significantly outnumbered Armenians. Members of the media called by Armenians shifted all attention to the Azerbaijanis and Turks.

40 minutes before the protest was supposed to end Armenians packed up and left. Thus, the Azerbaijani and Turkish communities celebrated very first, but crucial victory, once again proving their unity.

University of Toronto Azerbaijani Student Association (AzSA), the Federation of Canadian Turkish Associations (FCTA) and several community and student groups supported the initiative.
