A meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents, mediated by the Russian president, is under way in the Kazan Kremlin.
The leaders are discussing a peaceful settlement to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
They are expected to discuss what are known as the Basic Principles of a conflict settlement, which will form the basis for talks on a peace agreement.
The talks began with just the three leaders, Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Serzh Sargsyan of Armenia and Dmitriy Medvedev of Russia, but later expanded to include delegations.
The foreign ministers of all three countries, Elmar Mammadyarov of Azerbaijan, Edward Nalbandian of Armenia and Sergey Lavrov of Russia, are taking part, alongside presidential aides, including Sergey Prikhodko, aide to Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev.
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Thursday saying "the document to be discussed in Kazan is a result of an important period of joint work of the parties and co-chairs. It lays a solid foundation for the further advancement and preparation of a comprehensive peace agreement."
Moscow expects that "Baku and Yerevan will respond constructively to the joint statement issued on 26 May in Deauville by the presidents of the countries co-chairing the OSCE Minsk Group - the Russian Federation, the United States and the French Republic - which calls on Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders to show political will and complete discussion of the draft Basic Principles on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict during the Kazan summit".
