'Pentagon Can’t Ignore Karabakh Conflict'

'Pentagon cannot ignore also the fact that the Karabakh conflict causes difficulties for US in its relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan.'

The Pentagon cannot ignore the fact that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a key issue both for Armenia and Azerbaijan, a senior US Defense Ministry official has said.

Celeste Wallander, the Deputy US Defense Secretary on Russia, Ukraine Eurasia issues, who is on a visit to the South Caucasus region, said that the Pentagon cannot ignore also the fact that the Karabakh conflict causes difficulties for US in its relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Asked by the RFE/RL about the efficiency of cooperation among US, Armenia and Azerbaijan, she said: “The position of the US Defense Secretary is the following – to focus especially on those directions where we can offer constructive and useful assistance.”

“Such assistance that will enable those countries to enlarge their contribution in strengthening world security,” she added.
