Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his American counterpart Barack Obama had a telephone conversation on Monday on a range of issues, including the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, according to a report from the Kremlin.

“As heads of the states co-chairing the OSCE Minsk Group, Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama exchanged views on the situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” the Russian president’s administration said in a statement.

Obama reportedly praised his Russian counterpart’s efforts in mediating talks between the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents in Kazan last month and his active role in the peace process.

Both sides pledged to take coordinated measures in order to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Medvedev has presented his new proposals on a Karabakh settlement to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, through Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who was on a shuttle diplomacy mission in the South Caucasus on Friday.

Earlier, Sargsyan and Aliyev talked at a Russia-hosted summit, but contrary to international mediators’ expectations, could not resolve their remaining differences to reach agreement around the basic principles of settlement.

Russia’s chief diplomat Lavrov was expected in Washington on Monday to discuss a range of issues, including Russia’s latest proposals on Karabakh.

Prior to his visit to the U.S on the Twitter account of the Russian Foreign Ministry Lavrov reiterated Moscow’s expectation of responses from the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders.

“It’s time to negotiate. We await their response,” he wrote.
