Azerbaijan More Important To Russia Than Armenia

Collective Security Treaty Organization will not be of real use to Armenia.

The statement came from MP, political scientist Rasim Musabayov.

He was answering the a question from first deputy editor-in-chief of Ekho Moskvy radio station Vladimir Varfolomeyev about whether Azerbaijan loses from being not member of the CSTO unlike Armenia, since inside the organization there are principles which allow, for example, to protect one of the members?.

'Well, let’s say that Armenia will see no use of CSTO. I want to remind that it will see no military benefit. CSTO did not give even political support to Russia when the conflict in Georgia erupted. And I have to say that when the General Assembly discussed the situation in the occupied lands of Azerbaijan, none of the CSTO members voted for Armenia except for Russia. All, including Belarus, abstained, while Uzbekistan voted for Azerbaijan', the political scientist said.

According to Musabayov, despite the security treaty between Moscow and Armenia and the presence of the Russian military base in Armenian territory, in terms of profit and importance, Azerbaijan is more important to Russia than Armenia both economically and geopolitically.

'When they say ‘South Caucasus”, people probably think that Azerbaijan constitutes 60% of the population in the region. Azerbaijan constitutes 70% of the South Caucasus economy and gross product.

Azerbaijan constitutes 90% of export potential and monetary and financial gets of the South Caucasus. And I think that the actions  towards peace in Russia, which we observe at the active pace now, are mostly connected with the fact that though militarily and politically Russia bears responsibility, including for Armenia, its interests in the South Caucasus are bound to Azerbaijan. And it is be very unpleasant and inappropriate to make a hard choice in conditions of possible confrontation', he said.
