“Armenian Mountaineers Can Only Climb Mount Agri”

E-mail Print PDF

The head of Turkish Mountaineering Federation said on Thursday that Armenian mountaineers could only climb Mount Agri.

Alaattin Karaca said Mount Agri belonged to Turkey, and Armenian mountaineers could only climb it.

Karaca's remarks came after Armenian President Serzh Sargsian said his generation liberated Upper Karabakh as part of their land and that it was the mission of the next generation to recover Agri.

"Sports is universal, and so does mountaineering. We have invited Armenian mountaineers to climb Mount Agri in the past in the name of friendship," Karaca said.

Karaca said Armenian mountaineers had also joined Mount Agri climbing events organized to mark the August 30 Victory Day.

"This is our mountain, and Armenian mountaineers can only climb it. Every mountaineer can get necessary permissions and climb Mount Agri under the leadership of a Turkish guide, but cannot recover it," Karaca said.

Karaca said he did not think the Armenian mountaineers who had climbed Mount Agri in the past had any thought of recovering the mountain.

The federation chairman said the federation supported establishment of good relations with Armenia in the name of friendship and sports, but would never let anyone to have an eye on Turkey's mountains.

Karaca also said the federation had invited many foreign mountaineers to Mount Agri Victory Climbing to take place on August 30.
