At his Aug. 10 meeting with journalists, Edward Antinyan, Chairman of the Ramkavar Azatakan Democratic Liberal Party of Armenia, expressed his appreciation of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's efforts to settle the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. "But, I am sorry, he will not succeed," he said.
Antinyan believes that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict cannot be resolved through the mediation of the United States, Russia or Iran. Nor will a new war break out. Great powers agree to war only if a problem persists for a long time and they "are tired of persuading this one o that one." So the centers of power may provoke a short war and then force one of the belligerents into peace, Antinyan said.
This is practiced worldwide. "However, the great powers' interests are not concurrent now. So I rule out both a long-term war and a short-term one," he said.
