German Ombudsman On Karabakh Peace

E-mail Print PDF

Germany's human rights commissioner, Markus Loening, has stressed the importance of a peaceful resolution to the Karabakh conflict.

"Recently, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said that negotiations held in the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group should promote the resolution of the Karabakh problem,” the ombudsman told a briefing in Baku on Monday.

The Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh can be resolved only by peaceful means, Loening stressed.

"Only a peaceful settlement of the conflict can ensure the return of internally displaced persons to their homes."

He noted that he had visited Azerbaijan eight years ago and drawn attention to the distressing situation in which internally displaced persons lived.

On his meetings in Azerbaijan, Markus Loening said that he had met Azerbaijan's human rights commissioner, Elmira Suleymanova.

He said he would meet representatives of the Presidential Administration on 16 August.

Meetings with officials of political parties are also planned.
