“There are three trends in the Azeri society: pro-western, pro-Russia and Islamic. The most serious factor is Islam, which appears as a force capable to regain Karabakh. Islamists say that the world powers will pump out all Azeri oil and then leave Azerbaijan to the mercy of fate,” Arif Yunusov, head of department of conflictology and migration at the institute of peace and democracy, said during ‘European Union and South Caucasus – A Security Partnership?’ international conference in Yerevan today. “There is also a sense of defenselessness before Russia. So, European Union is Azerbaijan’s last hope and it can help resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict,” Yunusov said. Polish official: EU may help reconciliation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia Poland can be a bridge between the European Union and South Caucasus states, a Polish official said. A matter of common concern could unite the three republics, although Armenia and Azerbaijan need time to resolve the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. For its part, Georgia needs to maintain sovereignty, as return of the breakaway territories in unreal,” said Jan Rokita Former chief of the Prime Minister Chancellery. “Three aspects are vital here. First, you should support each other. Otherwise, third states will attempt to push forth their own interests while settling your problems. Second, the blockade of Armenia should be lifted with further inclusion of the republic in all regional projects. In this respect, deployment of international peacekeepers in the Karabakh conflict zone would be useful. Third, all of three countries should be included in the Eastern Partnership,” Mr. Rokita said. Poland can be a bridge between the European Union and South Caucasus states, according to him. |
